“you fucking wrote this? like, this is your song? not a cover? wow. i mean, really. wow. this is amazing. i’m… inspired.”
i have several musician friends who have toured across the country, some in pretty big name bands, some good, some not so good. but the point is, regardless of your taste in music, the fact that they wrote their own songs the old fashioned way, none of this garage band bullshit, they inspired me to want to create something. anything. i dabbled in music, i shot photos, i drew, i wrote. the urge to do these things probably didn’t last that long, but it’s not every day that someone doing something they love, and doing it well, influences your want to make something of yourself. it’s just… good.
i think the thing that really galvanizes this yearning to be better yourself is the image and idea of enveloping yourself in something that’s bigger than you. it’s romantic letting this thing take you over. something that means something to you. even if it doesn’t translate to anyone else, it’s for you. and if someone relates to it and loves it like you love, even in a different way, then by all means, please create. allow yourself to give into inspiration and creation. even if it’s an out of focus picture of some shirtless dude wading through his own muddled chaos of coffee stained moleskin pages and bugler tobacco remnants.
